References

A reference is a person in a position to give valid comment on you and your abilities. It is only the name, the title and how to contact the person.

Usually employers request three professional and three personal references.

The use is not to include these references on your resume (space is important), but to put them on a separate sheet. The reference section ALWAYS comes last.

Who can be a reference? Faculty members, employers and all other persons who had supervised you.

Professional references.

They include:

  • the reference's name.
  • job title.
  • company
  • address, phone number, and e-mail (if available)

A reference is very useful when the person's position relatively close to the job you want.

Personal references.

They include:

  • the reference's name
  • job title if helpful
  • address, phone number (ask references if they wish to use personal or professional address and phone number).
  • if the reference is a co-worker, mentioning it can be beneficial.

You must ASK PERMISSION before using people as references. It could be very helpful to let them know which kind of jobs you are looking for and which skills are needed.

It is advised to check out what your references will say about you: works, habits, reliability and so on.

Be sure that your reference has all documents that he/she needs.

If your reference is a former employer, ask that employer if he would rehire you.

Do not hesitate to remove references who may give a negative feedback about you.

ESIEE/ESTE: Ask one of your teachers, or the director of the school, to be your academic reference.

Style: use the same design as your resume.

Examples:
