Hey Vincent,

I have a minor issue with the script you wrote. Whenever I send an SMS message my processor usage goes to 100% until I get delivery report "All targets successfully delivered". Any ideas how could I fix this.

Thnx.

The problem is with the loopback. If you use sync command you will see that everyting fine. But again there is a problem, you have to sync almost every second if u copy. :(.

I tried it on Fedora Core 6, with python 2.4.4 and Skype 2.0.0.27. It works fine, after installing Skype4Py 0.9.28.7 and ctypes 1.0.2.

Great work!
I wonder why it is not included in the official Skype release!

Thanks for these comments.

Referring to the lack of 3G, here is an article that explains it in more details:
http://www.blackfriarsinc.com/blog/2007/10/why-edge-versus-3g-less-than-you-think

Some older BlackBerry were criticized for the same reasons by the way.

I have the same feeling as you : each time I look at the device I wonder how they did ! It is an impressive piece of technology and software.

Of course, as a long Mac user, I have some clues : GUI running on the 3D accelerator ; CoreAnimation for consistent effects and animations in the GUI ; an ARM11 running at 400MHz so higher than lot of smartphones (and which could run at 600).

The result is impressive. It is a very good tradeoff.

I have a data plan because wifi is not so widespread where I live. I was surprised to see that Edge is not a problem. I even compared with 3G on a phone from a well known company. The 3G phone was loading a mobile version of lemonde.fr and the iPhone was loading the normal version of the same page through Edge (using the same operator). Surprising result : the 3G phone was left in the dust ! It was so slow to load the page !!

My conclusion : the physical layer is the bottleneck only when you use your phone as a modem, as a data pump. But, when the phone has to do the processing of the data (web browser ...) then the software stacks are the bottleneck. And that's why my iPhone with Edge was much faster to load the page. So, the lack of 3G is really not a problem.

The only problem I had is for synchro with my very old Mac because my very very old Mac has only USB1.1 and the iPhone is supporting only USB2.0. So, it is working but no so well : it is slow and sometimes, the connection between the Mac and the iPhone is broken and I have to restart iTunes. But, except this problem, I am in love with my iPhone too.

Other phones look pathetic compared to it. Of course, they have better hardware but who cares ! The real difficulty does not consist in putting as much hardware as possible. The real difficulty is in making the right tradeoff. It is often more difficult to remove a feature than add one.

Of course, the iPhone is not perfect and that's why there will be lots of software updates and version 2 of the hardware. But for a version 1.0 it is as perfect as possible. An impressive device !

Has anyone found a work around so you don't have to remove send_sms from the public api allowed programs each time? I tried fmatheus tip but it alters sk_send_sms.py instead of send_sms.py. What line do I need to add the 'sms_sender'+random.random() line to? Any help much appreciated.

Btw Great script Vincemt, Keep up the good work

It's a good point, how I solve it:
- I keep 2 backups of my laptop at 2 different physical location.
- I keep the key to access the backups also a 2 different physical location.

Sure it would be simpler not to encrypt anything. And in fact I don't encrypt everything, only the files that must be.

Is it wise to encrypt a backup in the first place ? I don't know how encfs and truecrypt work, but what if you loose your key during the "disaster" that makes you require your backuped data ?
Personally I try to keep my backups as "open" as possible : no encryption, and open file formats if possible (ex: DNG instead of NEF for my DSLR pics).
And of course I try not to loose my USB drive ;)
