What I’m doing at Skype
Happy New Year to everybody! After a very busy 2005, 2006 promises to be very exciting too.
For Skype, the CES in Las Vegas, which has just started, is an important event. There are several Skype devices that we are announcing with our partners there, some of them I’ve worked on.
This gives me the occasion to explain a bit more what I’m doing at Skype. I’m in the team that works on getting Skype running on all kind of devices (embedded and mobile devices). This means having Skype itself run on the embedded device, not only hardware that connects to the PC and uses the Skype running on your PC.
Skype for Windows PocketPC / Smartphone exists since a while and now at CES we are launching some Wifi phones. These devices use a vast variety of hardware (chipset) and the embedded team I’m part of deals with porting the Skype engine on all these chipsets. We are also involved in optimizing Skype for devices with little memory and slow CPUs. Finally we also help our partners develop the User Interface of the device, answering their questions, hunting bugs, etc.
We are already running on a nice range of chipsets, but there are many more to address, especially those with even slower CPUs and less memory, but also cheaper. Some interesting challenges to come.

Hello,
First of all I have been watching skype for a while, and I am delighted to use it’s services.
I am in a environment that supports a variety of wireless device including a majority of companies orld wide that employs a GSM network, and the one that comes to mind are the HTC devices. Which of these devices does Skype prefers?
