Why I will get a Game Boy Micro instead of PSP

Since the PSP came out, I have been lusting over it. The gorgeous screen makes it a real nice looking device. But I lately decided I won’t be getting one.

First it’s actually not such a great gaming machine. I’ve got feedback that the buttons are oddly placed and uncomfortable, and I made the same conclusion when seeing the device. But much worse is that loading times can be pretty long, 30 seconds to start a game, 1 minute between game levels.

Also the PSP is too big to fit in a pocket. If I carry a bag, I’m likely to have my laptop, a much more versatile device than the PSP.

I don’t play that much games, so I would rather use the PSP to watch videos. But that would mean buying one of these ridiculous Memory Stick, adding about a 100 Euros to the device. Not worth it, especially if I have my laptop anyway.

And lets not forget that the games are much too expensive.

Then I read recently Ars Technica review of the Game Boy Micro and concluded that this device would be much more appropriate for me. It is really portable. It is much cheaper and the games are not too expensive neither. And it’s really made for casual gaming, allowing for shorter gaming sessions.

As for watching video, I prefer putting the PSP money in my living room.

I didn’t really consider the Nintendo DS as it is more expensive and less portable. I mean I don’t think it holds easily in a jacket pocket. If I get a portable console, it would be for casual gaming, for serious gaming I would rather get a Xbox 360 or a good PC.

Did you ever consider the Nokia 770, the Internet Tablet, running linux ?

Sure, but it’s not at all for the same usage. Here I was speaking about a gaming device, while the Nokia 770 doesn’t have games but would rather be used to access the web from the living room, control a media center, use Skype, etc.
