Finland, not a broadband example
Who would have thought that Finland was a retarded country in term of broadband?.. The customer support guy from Sonera told me Friday evening “Sorry, your line won’t be activated before March 31st” (I made my demand on March 3rd). One month to get broadband!
And this is even not ADSL, it’s an inferior technology called HomePNA capped at 1 Mbps and only 128 kbps in upload. It’s only 23 Euros / month, but it is actually expensive for such a crappy service. See this good description of HomePNA and broadband in Finland.
Lets compare this to a few countries supposedly much less advanced than Finland.
In China, 2 years ago, we made our ADSL demand and two days after we had a technician coming installing us a new phone line and our connection was activated.
In France, I had over 8 Mbps (it was so fast and increasing quickly that I even don’t remember the exact value) and for 30 Euros / month it included unlimited national phone calls and many TV channels.
My parents, who are living in a small village, got their connection activated and received their modem in less than a week.
In Estonia, Ingrid made her demand on the web and two days later her connection was activated.
In Finland one month! And it’s not specific to this HomePNA technology, a colleague told me that Sonera also announced him 3-4 weeks to wait for his ADSL connection.
And apparently there isn’t free Wifi in every bars and café like in Estonia. Finland would have something to learn from its little neighbor here.
