The Weblog of Vincent Oberle - Thoughts and opinions about technology and business

3GSM impressions

I visited the 3GSM congress in Cannes today, the biggest congress in the world for the mobile phone industry. I took some photos of the coolest toys that I put on my Flickr page.

As always, many companies, many people. Not much changed in term of software and applications from last year. The software companies already had their products last year, but the big difference this year is that they are finally getting into the phones.

The phones are really packed with features. 3G phones are there, EDGE too. All phones have camera and 1 mega-pixels is really the strict minimum, with 2 and 3 mega-pixels coming. In general the quality of the pictures has really improved a lot, we are very close of a camera-phone being able to replace entry level digital cameras.

Bluetooth and memory card support is also becoming common. Most of the phones also support playing videos, and the quality is very good. With some of the big screens, it’s going to be fun watching videos on these.

Check out my photo set for more comments on what I saw.

I find personnaly that there were new applications in 2005 & services around VoIP& Instant Messaging. MMS has almost disappeared. I wrote a post on it on my blog ; you can have a look (and there are some pretty girls too ;-) !)
