My new camera
Finally, we got a digital camera. We chose the Canon Ixus 40 (also called PowerShot SD300).
I had hesitated a lot with the Canon Powershot A85. The advantages of the A85 were a better picture quality, use of standard AA batteries and of CompactFlash for storage (since I already own CF cards) and cheaper price. But the Ixus 40 is much smaller, holding in a pocket. And it is also faster. See the complete reviews at Digital Photography Review and DCRP.
I will get the chance to apply good backup practices…
I’ve started using the software provided by Canon (ZoomBrowser). Not bad, but I will probably end up using Picasa for all my local photo manipulation, and a Flickr account for my photo sharing needs. At $45 per year for unlimited storage and 1GB upload per month, it’s a pretty good deal. I’m only worrying about what will happen to Flickr, like if they get bought, since I’m going to invest time and energy in Flickr.
