Interesting news came in today in the world of the smartphone operating systems: PalmSource, the maker of Palm OS, is acquiring China MobileSoft, a Chinese company that has a complete Linux solution for smartphones (from experience at kernel and driver level to the applications).

Previously there had been some rumors of PalmOne, the maker of the Palm PDAs and the Treo smartphone, doing Windows Mobile-powered Treo.

All this pretty much feels like PalmOS is having its days counted. Not a surprise actually, the latest version of PalmOS was falling quite behind OSes like Symbian or Windows Mobile in term of features and performance, and had been delayed several times. Buying China Mobilesoft seems therefore a move from PalmSource to simply find a new place in huge phone market.
