Such a deception
Although I’m French, I have been following this US election with a lot of interest. French TV had many reports about various aspects of the US, like the importance of religion. The French-German channel Arte had basically everyday some very interesting program on the US. Some of these programs have been quite frightening, especially regarding the importance of religion, “moral values” and all these ideas, which when pushed to the extremes do so much bad.
But from the various blogs I have been reading, I still believed that Americans were going to see the obvious reality and not reelect Bush. But they did, and this year Bush won the popular vote by a good 3 % margin. More people voted for him this year than 4 years ago. I also can’t understand how so many people could vote for Bush.
On Sunday the French newspaper Le Monde gave their support to Kerry, saying “pour qu’à la Maison Blanche s’installe une équipe non plus guidée par le Bien et le Mal, mais par le droit et la justice”, i.e. so that the White House gets a team not guided by the Good and the Evil concepts, but by the right and justice
It seems we get completely the opposite, as it stroked me in this CNN article:
More exit poll respondents — about 22 percent — called “moral values” the election’s most important issue […]. Those expressing this sentiment backed the president overwhelmingly, 79 percent to Kerry’s 18 percent.
Frightening.
This is not the US we admire. Actually it is the proof that the US are not anymore as we saw it in Europe. This time the people voted for Bush, approving everything that is happening in Irak, the Patriot Act, etc.
But it’s still tough to believe.

Please, world, do not foresake us. Yes, more Americans voted for Bush, but while he won by three percent, that means nearly half of us disapprove of him. Many Americans wanted to defeat Bush as much as our enlightened fellow citizens of the world. We are even more miserable about it than you are, since we also have to live with his HORRIBLE domestic policies as well. I am shocked that those who wanted “moral values” voted for Bush. It is just a ruse to end abortion. What is moral about striking first without cause in a war and sending thousands of American soldiers to their death? Do not condemn us in New York and California for the gullible hicks who live in middle America.
